Pilates

Pilates is an exercise technique using concentrated movements with specific emphasis on core activation; it promotes spinal and joint stability, as well as mobility. Pilates is a full body workout that increases muscular strength and endurance and improves flexibility and postural alignment. In addition, it helps clients improve their balance and coordination.

Joseph Pilates, the founder of the practice, based his technique on certain principles which are referenced in his book "Return to Life Through Contrology." Contrology refers to the art of controlled movement. One of the primary principles is breathing, as it is an integral component of the technique. Learning how to use your breathing in synchronicity with your movement introduces the concepts of control and flow, which are two additional principles of Pilates. Mastering these will improve the clients' coordination and efficiency of movement.

In addition, the principles of centering and precision can positively affect balance and enhance the mind/body connection. Our core is a prime stabilizer of the body. Referred to as the "powerhouse," it provides support for the spine, hip and shoulder complexes, assists in breathing and helps to maintain our center.

Another benefit of Pilates is the varying degrees of difficulty built into the technique. The intensity increases as the clients' ability to adapt to the movement does.
